Things can turn dark, really quick

Wearing all-black can either be super sexy or have you blend into the night

There is an actual danger when you end up wearing all-black the wrong way. It’s one thing to be wearing all black at the work place, uniforms are a must. The difference between wearing the same shade of colour from head to toe for a casual or work environment is vastly different from sporting it an evening event. Believe it or not, it is actually a difficult task of wearing all black to a special event. Whether it’s a tuxedo or an all black suit, attention to detail should be first priority.

The event
Regarding an evening event, an all-black look focus should shift towards the slight shade differences between each piece. A tie or bowtie, dress shirt and even shoes have to be carefully chosen. People will not be able to appreciate the fine tailoring of a suit or tuxedo if the lines cannot be visible or highlighted. When you have the proper contrast between the major pieces, the details tend to pop out and the fitting appears more attractive. And that, gentlemen, is incredibly important.

First layer
Most tuxedos have that fine sheen to the fabric, picking up the right dress shirt can be a bit tricky. You could always take the safe route and go with the traditional white dress shirt, but we’re talking about a black outfit here. The texture and appearance of the black dress shirt cannot look dull whatsoever. If anything, it should compliment the tuxedo or suit so make sure it’s crisp and clean and doesn’t get lost into the darkness. Unless it’s your patent leather shoes, try and avoid the sheen as much as possible.

Accessories in supportAs we all know, a supporting cast is always important. The tie, shoes and even a pocket square have to take careful consideration. The shoes are an easy case. Ties and pocket squares are a completely different story. Just like the dress shirt, your tie’s fabric plays a significant role. The different texture will give off a different shade of black, and that’s a good thing. In all black suit, with a black dress shirt, looks amazing with a knitted black tie. Pocket squares can be placed in the pocket in any kind of fold but there isn’t much wiggle room when it comes to patterns and colours. To be on the safe side, stick to solid colours without prints and patterns on them.

End of the day
Wearing all-black brings mystery or intrigue, class and sophistication. All you have to do is to learn the difference between a uniform look and a proper elegant look. The minimal outfit requires more effort than you would like to believe. Keep in mind, a smart man knows this is the ultimate form of formal. There should be no space for mistakes. And always make sure your tux or suit is totally fitted, but that goes without saying.
Style Tip: If the all-black look is too much for you, opt for the midnight blue tux or suit. It’s as sophisticated as the black, with an extra touch of too cool.
