It was a soulful experience for devotees of Baul music and philosophy who attended the event titled Baul Shondhya, where a wide array of popular and thought provoking philosophical songs by famous musicians were presented. Organised by Baul Bazaar, the programme was held at the Music and Dance Auditorium of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on November 18.
The programme featured traditional Baul songs of Lalon, Hason Raja, Baul Shah Abdul Karim, Matal Kobi Razzak Dewan, Kobi Jalal and others. The beauty and depth of the understanding and intellectual thoughts of these root level philosophers were presented to the crowd with special focus on the legendary Lalon Fakir.
Lalon’s belief in the power of music to change the intellectual and emotional state in order to be able to understand and appreciate life itself is reflected quite clearly in his songs that have universal appeal and saintly touch that wins the hearts of people apart from contest, belief and religion. It has its own trusts on life and spiritual love.
The crowd was held fascinated though numbers such as Shaym Tomar Lila Bujo Mon Bujho Na and Dui Chokher Ishara Diya Poran Kaira Nili Go by Mostofa, timeless song of Lalon titled Bol Shorup Kothay Tomar Shadher Piyari and Baul Abdul Karim’s Keno Piriti Baraila Bondhu Chhere Jaiba Jodi by Baul Shahin took the audience to a different realm and kept them occupied in the depth of the spiritual truths.
Baul Akash presented Hason Raja’s song Baula Ke Banailo Re and Kobi Jalal’s song Bhab Toronge Esho Amar Shonge. His performance took the audience to their ultimate height, as the instrumentalists gave a ground breaking dance performance onstage matching the rhythm of his songs.
Another Baul singer Iqbal, with his modulated voice rendered a love song by Fazlur Rahman Babu titled Nithua Patare Nemechhi Bondhure that become even more popular after being featured in the movie Monpura.
Shahid Sarker, Selim Reza, Baul Karim Shah, Pagol Chanchal, Nurul Islam among others also enchanted the audience with charming performances.
