Bangladesh Open International Badminton begins tomorrow

Top-ranked Asian countries will take part, like Malaysia. So, Bangladesh’s chances are very slim

In the presence of top-ranked shuttlers from Asia alongside Croatia and Syria, the Yonex-Sunrise Bangladesh Open International Badminton Challenge 2014 will get underway at Shaheed Suhrawardi Indoor Stadium in Mirpur tomorrow.

The number of participants has decreased from 92 to 78 from the previous edition. The five-day long event will be graced by 46 male and 32 female participants from 11 countries. The participating countries are - Malaysia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Nepal, Maldives, Croatia, Syria, Turkey, Sri Lanka and hosts Bangladesh. The tournament will conclude on December 6. 

A press conference was held yesterday at Bangladesh Olympic Association where the details of the event were revealed. The event will have five categories - men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles.

Yonex, a world renowned name in badminton and sports accessories, has stepped up once again as the title sponsor of the event. There are nine other co-sponsors including Biman Bangladesh Airlines, Roxy Paints Limited, Exim Bank Limited and Qubee among others. The budget of the tournament is approximately Tk47,76,500 while the total prize money is Tk12,00,000.

Bangladesh Badminton Federation general secretary Jubaidur Rahman Rana termed the event as one of the biggest in the country and believes Bangladesh will benefit from it. “There are top-ranked Asian countries taking part in the event like Malaysia. So, Bangladesh’s chances are very slim. However, the players can boost their rankings by playing this international tournament.”

Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports Arif Khan Joy will inaugurate the event as the chief guest.
