The incident took place on Tuesday during the annual sports day at Nilkamal Osmania High School in Chandpur’s Haimchar upazila.

Photos and videos of Nur Hossain walking across the student bodies garnered much vitriol on social media.

According to a local TV station, Nur Hossain issued a public apology for his actions on Wednesday evening,

A one-member probe committee has been formed to look into the matter by Chittagong division's Additional Commissioner Syeda Sarwar Jahan, confirmed by the Chittagong Divisional Commissioner's office. The probe report has to be submitted within three working days.

The Dhaka Tribune reached out to contact Nur Hossain, but found his phone switched off.

The school’s principal Mosharraf Hossain, however, made an attempt to defuse the situation.

“The incident had been blown out of proportion. It has been a tradition of our annual sports event since 2003,” he said while talking to the Dhaka Tribune

The principal further claimed Upazila Chairman Nur Hossain Patwary had initially refused to climb the students, but acquiesced when students and teachers continued to press him.

Witnesses claim after Nur Hossain got off the human bridge, he rewarded the students with Tk5,000 in cash.
