Journalists in the district staged a human chain on Saturday protesting attacks on them across the country during shutdowns enforced by the BNP-Jamaat-led 18-party alliance.

The weekly Sramik Kantha organised the human chain at the Mission intersection in the town. Journalists of print and electronic media took part in the hour-long human chain. Speakers at the human chain said journalists have fallen victims to political violence throughout the country though they are not involved in any politics.

A section of political leaders think that journalists are their rivals and that is why they are launching attacks on them to take revenge, they said adding that their vehicles, cameras, laptops and other equipment too are destroyed.

General Secretary of Lalmonirhat Press Club and the Daily Samakal correspondent Ahmedur Rahman Mukul said journalist community would launch a vigorous campaign and boycott all kinds of political programmes if the attacks on them continued.

Editor of the weekly Sramik Kantha Maniruzzaman Manir, also the general secretary of Bangladesh Sangjukta Sramik Federation in Lalmonirhat, also spoke at the human chain.
