An elderly Bangladesh Railway staff sacrificed his life on Friday during a daredevil rescue attempt of a woman and her child from being crushed under a moving train right outside Dhaka Cantonment Railway Station area.

Badol Mia, 55, from Mymensingh’s Gafargaon, used to supervise railgates in surrounding areas from the Dhaka Cantonment Station to Dhaka Airport Railway Station and was also a technical assistant for railroad maintenance, according to Mamuin Mia, Badol’s son. 

Quoting an eyewitness, Railway Police’s Kuril area in-charge Sub-Inspector Akbar Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune that Badol was performing maintenance task on Kuril-Bishwa Road railroad around 1pm when he noticed a woman and a child crossing the rail lines nearby, completely unaware of an approaching train.

Though he managed to rescue the mother and the child from a fatal end but could not save himself, Akbar confirmed.

Badol’s body was taken to Dhaka Medical College for autopsy. 

Badol will be buried at his ancestral home in Gafargaon, Mamun, also a railway staff, said.

Badol’s namaz-e-janaza will be held at Kamalapur Railway Station premises before moving the body to Mymensingh.
