A Delhi chef has been arrested after shooting dead a colleague from Myanmar. The 25-year-old shot his colleague after blaming him for allegedly introducing him to smoking, which had led to a throat cancer diagnosis.
According to the Hindustan Times, Mustakeem Ahmad’s Burmese colleague Inayat, also 25, had been working as a cook in the West Delhi restaurant owned by Ahmad’s brother-in-law for the past 18 months. Ahmad had also been offered a job as a cook.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Shibesh Singh said that “though Ahmad and Inayat were friends at the workplace, Inayat was reportedly better at his job and well-behaved and soon became the favourite of the restaurant owner”.
Singh continued that this likely led to Ahmad to develop an enmity towards Inayat.
Ahmad, allegedly under the influence of Inayat, took up the smoking of cigarettes and marijuana. “In the course of time, Ahmad developed a throat infection, forcing him to consult a doctor. Ahmad has claimed that the doctor told him he had developed throat cancer due to excessive smoking,” Singh said.
Sooner after his diagnosis, Ahmad was fired from his position at the restaurant. He returned to his village in Uttar Pradesh, where he bought the pistol that he later used to murder Inayat.
The Hindustan Times reported that Ahmad, who was arrested on Friday, was so stricken with hate that he purchased and practiced using the pistol so as to be sure to hit the target.
