AR Rahman's daughter has hit back after Taslima said that she feels suffocated when she looks at Khatija wearing a burqa
Writer and activist Taslima Nasreen is known for the controversial statements she makes on social media. This time, her opinion on Indian famous musician AR Rahman's daughter Khatija Rahman wearing a burqa has baffled the social media users, Indian media outlets reported.
Taslima said that she feels suffocated when she looks at Khatija wearing a burqa.
Sharing the photo, Taslima wrote on Twitter, “I absolutely love A R Rahman's music. But whenever i see his dear daughter, i feel suffocated. It is really depressing to learn that even educated women in a cultural family can get brainwashed very easily!”
This comment did not go well with Khatija.

She slammed Taslima with reply saying, “I’m sorry you feel suffocated by my attire. Please get some fresh air, cause I don’t feel suffocated rather I’m proud and empowered for what I stand for. I suggest you google up what true feminism means because it isn’t bashing other women down nor bringing their fathers into the issue. I also don’t recall sending my photos to you for your perusal.”
In the post, Khatija also mentioned that people have been speaking about her burqa for a year now. While questioning those people who speak of her clothes, she said that when there’s so much happening in the nation then why are people concerned about what women are wearing and not wearing.
Last year, Khatija accompanied AR Rahman for an event that celebrated the completion of a decade of Slumdog Millionaire's music album, for which the ace musician won Academy Awards.
At the event, Khatija delivered an emotional speech that went viral for all the wrong reasons.
People called out the singer for being a hypocrite and they even accused him of forcing his daughter to wear a burqa.
To give back to trolls and hate comments, Rahman posted a photo of his daughters who were seen wearing different types of attires.
The singer captioned the post, "The precious ladies of my family Khatija, Raheema and Sairaa with NitaAmbaniji #freedomtochoose."
Taslima is a Bangladeshi writer, physician, feminist and human rights activist. She is known for her writing on women's oppression and criticism of religion, despite forced exile and multiple fatwas calling for her death.
Some of her books are banned in Bangladesh.
Taslima was forced to leave Bangladesh in 1994 due to repeated threats from radical Muslim groups after her novel “Lajja” which depicts the persecution of a Hindu family by Muslims, ran into a controversy.
She currently lives in New Delhi since 2011.
