Govt to install VMS in fishing vessels

The government is going to install Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) in registered fishing trawlers and ships to monitor their movement in the sea as well as protect the marine resources of Bangladesh. “At present, the government cannot monitor the fishing ships to see how far they are going into the sea to catch fish. That is why we are launching a project to install the VMS in all registered vessels, with the assistance of the Malaysian government,” said Fisheries and Livestock Minister Sayedul Haque at parliament on Tuesday. “With this technology, it will be possible for us to monitor the movement of our ships from land,” he added. He said if any ship goes into an area where it is not allowed to go, the government will be able track it and take necessary actions against it. “This system will help us to a great extent in protecting our fishes.” The minister further said since October 2014, the authorities concerned have captured 62 foreign fishing trawlers illegal entering Bangladeshi sea territory, and actions have been taken against them.
