Nisha: US remains committed to Bangladesh
The United States has offered its expertise in improving Bangladesh's counter-terrorism capabilities in the aftermath of Gulshan terror attack. “I am here to offer US assistance and support for Bangladesh's own efforts against terrorism and extremism,” Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Biswal said in a statement on Monday. Nisha, accompanied by US Ambassador Marcia Bernicat and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Manpreet Anand, met Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan earlier in the day. They discussed Bangladesh-US bilateral relations and the security situation, a statement from the US embassy said. Terrorists barged into an upscale restaurant in Dhaka's diplomatic zone on July 1 and killed 20 hostages – three of them students at US universities – before being put down by commandos. She offered her condolence and reiterated her country's commitment to Bangladesh. Nisha said the US had taken steps to bolster the security of its staff, adding that her country appreciated Bangladesh's efforts to protect US citizens. The US official said Washington would continue its assistance in combating terrorism, which is a threat both the countries face. “Our support for and cooperation with Bangladesh remains as robust as ever,” she said. “We remain steadfast in our friendship with the Bangladeshi people.”
