The government has appointed a firm to assist Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) in providing services to vehicle owners and ease their hassle.
The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase on Wednesday approved the proposal placed by Road Transport and Highways Division to appoint a third-party organisation for collecting motor vehicles taxes and fees through online banking.
The Tk136.74-crore contract has been awarded to M/S Computer Network System, who will provide technical support to the BRTA for five years, said Cabinet Division Additional Secretary Mustafizur Rahman.
When in place, the new system will allow vehicle owners to submit fees for digital number plates and registration certificates online and collect plates and certificates on a given date from the BRTA.
The proposal – Collection of Motor Vehicles Taxes and Fees through Online Banking System for Five Years for BRTA – proposes an average transaction fee of Tk50.68 from existing Tk45 for the technical service provider.
Currently, fees for the Radio Frequency Identification tag number plate and digital registration certification have to be deposited at 232 branches of 14 commercial banks.
These banks have been receiving motor vehicle tax and fees through the online banking system since November 2010.
Mustafizur said the firm, M/S Computer, would provide 14 different services including collection of fees for motorcycle registration and ownership transfer and registration of other vehicles.
Other services include collecting fees for digital registration certificate, MV tax, conductor licence issuance and renewal, fitness certificate issuance and renewal, route permit issuance and renewal, and fine and penalty.
