PM: 280,000 homeless people in the country
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday told the parliament that the number of people recorded homeless in the country was around 280,000 till date. The premier gave the numbers in reply to a query during a question and answer session at the parliament on Wednesday. She said that her government has been working to improve living standards of homeless people through the eradication of poverty. She further mentioned that the process of listing homeless people across the country was under progress and till date around 280,000 people have been recorded as homeless in the country. Sheikh Hasina also hoped that her government would be able to provide homes for the 280,000 people within the next two years and eight months. Of them, 210,000 homes will be provided under Ashrayan 2 Project, 50,000 under Cluster Village Project and the remaining 20,000 under the project taken by the Bangladesh Bank to rehabilitate homeless people, she added. The prime minister said the government has also taken a pilot project in eight upazilas in eight districts to rehabilitate all homeless people. Replying to another query, the prime minister said that a draft national strategy has been prepared to increase the participation of Bangladesh in the United Nations peacekeeping activities. The premier said the national strategy was prepared with the combined coordination of the Foreign Ministry, the armed forces, police and concerned ministries and departments. She also said a coordinated team under the leadership of the prime minister will be there to implement the strategy. Currently, the draft of the strategy is waiting government approval, she added. Sheikh Hasina informed the House that until now 145,229 members of army, navy, air force, police, BGB, Ansar and VDB have participated in 55 UN missions in 40 countries. Currently, there are 1,127 police personnel and 7,350 armed force members in peacekeeping missions.
