Over 100 injured in Habiganj clash
The clash erupted on Sunday night. Among those injured, eight have been rushed to hospital in Sylhet, 15 to Habiganj Sadar and 20 to Bahubal Upazila Health complex. Police and locals said, one Belayet Hossain and Dulal Group of Mirpur purchased 4,000 pieces of scrapped cylinders from Omera several days ago. When they went to the Omera factory to take the cylinders on August 28, they faced resistance from Shamsu Master group of Natun Bazar area. Tension simmered in the area over the issue for next few days. People of Chargaon village took position for Belayet while Shamsu got supporters from seven surrounding villages including East Joypur. Supporters of Belayet and Shamsu fought pitched battles on Sunday night. At least 20 shops were vandalised and looted during the clash. Shop owners claim assets worth about Tk50 lakhs have been damaged. A riot police team, led by Assistant Police Superintendent Raselur Rahman rushed to spot and brought the situation under control. They had to fire over three hundreds rounds of rubber bullets and 18 teargas canisters to rein in the situation, ASP Rahman said.
