SC upholds bail for suspended Sylhet mayor
A five-member bench led by Chief Justice SK Sinha upheld the bail on Thursday when the state moved with a plea against the HC bail. Mainul Hossain, Abdul Hakim Kafi and Md Nizam Uddin stood for the defendant while Deputy Attorney General Dr Mohammad Bashir Ullah represented the state. On Tuesday, the HC granted bail in the case and a total of 32 witnesses gave deposition. Ariful lost his mayoral office January last year following his surrender before a district court on December 30, 2014. On November 13 that year, police submitted a supplementary charge sheet against 35 people including 11 new in the Kibria murder case. The freshly-indicted accused included Ariful, Habiganj Mayor GK Gaus and Haris Chowdhury, former political adviser to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. On January 27, 2005, five people, including Awami League-led government’s finance minister Kibria, were killed in a grenade attack carried out in a rally in Boidyer Bazar of Habiganj.
