Saudi decides to take male domestic workers
A recommendation in this regard was made by Mohamed Nagadi, chairman of the Council’s Committee on Administration and Human Resources, at its 49th Ordinary session in Riyadh on Monday. Appreciating the Shoura’s move, Bangladesh Ambassador Golam Moshi said it would be beneficial for both the countries. “The lifting of the ban on male domestic helps indicates improved bilateral relations,” he told Arab News. The Kingdom started recruiting female domestic aides in February last year while visas for male domestics were issued only from June this year. Out of the 1.3 million Bangladeshi workers in the Kingdom, 62,000 are housemaids. On an average, 6,000 female domestic workers arrive in the Kingdom every month, he said. “We have around 48 categories of workers serving in all parts of the Kingdom.” After the lifting of the six-year ban, the Kingdom will now take both skilled and unskilled workers from Bangladesh. Earlier this year, Saudi Arabia agreed to import one male domestic worker against each female housemaid. The process of lifting the ban began last year. Moshi said that three Saudi companies based in Dhaka would provide training and orientation programmes to the female domestic aides. “We will welcome more such organisations in Bangladesh so that they can train male domestic workers also.” Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam on August 29 announced that the government has fixed the migration cost for jobs in Saudi Arabia at Tk1.65 lakh.
