Cycling rally held to celebrate World Car-Free Day

Update : 26 Sep 2016, 08:47 PM
A cycling rally was organised by the Institute of Wellbeing on Saturday to celebrate the recent World Car-Free Day. The rally began from Dhanmondi road 5/A and finished at Jatiya Press Club, in an effort to promote bicycle lanes and car control to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, to create a more livable Dhaka city. Participants at the rally said that by creating cycling lanes and by promoting cycling, the huge number of deaths caused by motor vehicles on the road can be reduced. They pointed out that trips that can take an hour or more by car would take less than half the time if there were segregated cycle lanes that allowed people to reach their destination safely and without being blocked by the traffic caused by private cars. Rashmi Sarkar from Institute of Wellbeing said: “We want Dhaka to be a bicycle-friendly city for the benefit of all.” Several other cycling organisations such as Cyclers of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Cycle Lane Bastobayon Parishad, Bangladesh Scout and Guide Fellowship and more participated as part of the cycling contingent.
