A team of Bangladeshi trekkers have scaled the highest peak of Europe, Mount Elbrus, located in Russia near the Georgian frontier.
Led by Nishat Majumdar, the first Bangladeshi women to have scaled the Mount Everest, Ariful Islam and Junayed Sarkar trekked Mount Elbrus on September 16. Two other members of the team were supposed to return from some 5,300ft due to having height-related illness.
The Mount Elbrus is 18,510ft high.
The five mountaineers left home on September 8 for Russia and began their expedition from the Caucasus region on September 10.
Even though Aireen Parvin and Mirza Jakaria Baig stopped at 5,300ft, Nishat, Ariful and Junayed reached the peak.
The climbers shared their experiences at a press conference held in Dhaka yesterday evening, and handed back the expedition flag to the chief guest, eminent professor and writer Abdullah Abu Sayeed, along with the photographs as memorabilia.
Nishat said that it was their first expedition outside the Himalayas. “When we reached the peak, we saw the moon in the west and the sun in the east. It was a wonderful feeling,” she said.
Arif said: “Mountains have taught us how to be patient and be on order.”
MA Mohit, who have scaled the Mount Everest twice, also spoke at the conference and congratulated the expediters.
Prof Sayeed hailed the bravery of the trekkers, and said: “The Bangalis are rising. They not only climb the Mount Everest but also climbed the other summits of the world because they have talents and dreams.”
Earlier, Wasfia Nazreen, the second Bangladeshi woman to scale the Mount Everest, climbed the Mount Elbrus in March, 2013.
