Millions suffer as bailey bridge collapses

The bridge in Charkumaria River collapsed when a rod-laden truck was crossing it around 9:30pm. The Roads and Highways Department (RHD) has yet to take steps for its repair. Communications remain suspended between Shariatpur, Chandpur and other southern-western districts. Mintu Ranjon Debnath, executive engineer of the RHD, said: “The bridge connected Chandpur district to Shariatpur and thousands of goods-laden trucks used this road to carry goods in Chittagong and other parts of the country.” The engineer further said: “We will start repair works of the bridge after recovery the truck.”
