
A Habiganj court on Sunday rejected the bail petition of suspended Sylhet City Corporation mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury in an explosion case filed in connection with the killing of ex-finance minister SAMS Kibria.
District and Session Judge M Atabullah passed the order after hearing on a bail petition submitted by the lawyer of Ariful Haque. He also fixed the next hearing date on November 8.
Ariful lost his mayoral office January last year following his surrender before a district court on December 30, 2014.
On November 13 that year, police submitted a supplementary charge sheet against 35 people including 11 new in the Kibria murder case. The freshly-indicted accused included Ariful, Habiganj Mayor
GK Gaus and Haris Chowdhury, former political adviser to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
On January 27, 2005, five people, including Awami League-led government’s finance minister Kibria, were killed in a grenade attack carried out in a rally in Boidyer Bazar of Habiganj.
