Activists protest sectarian violence
The protesters urged everyone to unite against communal violence at a torchlight rally held from Shahbagh to TSC. The speakers also criticised the role of local upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and law makers of Brahmanbaria. Human rights activist Khusi Kabir spoke at the rally after having visited Brahmanbaria. She said: “The people there have lost their trust on the government and the violence that took place is dreadful.” “We want to be clear that we will be defeated by sectarian forces. We have the right to follow our own religion and the state should ensure every one's rights are upheld.” These attacks did not just happen suddenly, it has been bubbling under the surface for a long time, she added. “It has been reported that these attacks are preplanned”, said professor Anu Muhammad, member secretary of National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas and Mineral Resources, Power and Ports. “The strength of our countries lies in our diversity and that must be protected. The people must unite in this regard,” Anu said. Journalist Faruk Wasif said: “The people from different communities have been attacked by those who claim to be secular.”
