PM visits old central jail

The prime minister, along with her younger sister Sheikh Rehana, also visited the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Jail Memorial Museum and Four National Leaders Memorial Museum inside the recently vacated central jail. She first placed wreaths at the bust of Bangabandhu in front of Bangabandhu Jail Memorial Museum and observed a few moments of silence there in respect of the memory of the country’s architect of independence. Hasina then visited the prison cell where Bangabandhu was kept confined during the Pakistan rule. The cell has now been named as Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Jail Memorial Museum. She later went around the gallery in the prison cell that bears the memory of Bangabandhu. Sheikh Rehana’s son Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, local parliament member Haji Mohammad Selim, former lawmaker Dr Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin, former Bangladesh ambassador to the UN AK Abdul Momen, Dhaka City South Awami League President Abul Hasnat and General Secretary Shahe Alam Murad, The prime minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim and Inspector General of Prison Brigadier General Iftekharul Islam was present there as well. Both Hasina and Rehana, who survived the carnage of August 15, 1975, became emotional witnessing the materials Bangabandhu had used during his prolonged prison time. Later, she went to the prison cell where the four national leaders – Tajuddin Ahmed, Syed Nazrul Islam, Captain Monsur Ali and AHM Qamaruzzaman – were brutally killed on November 3, 1975. She first placed wreaths on the busts of the leaders and observed a few moments of silence to pay homage to their memories. Earlier, the inspector general of prison briefed the prime minister about various projects in the former Dhaka Central Jail through the physical feature survey and topographic map.
