Bangladesh launches anti-tobacco campaign

State Minister for Health Zahid Maleque has said that tobacco is the cause of 14.6% of adult male deaths and 5.7% of the adult female deaths in Bangladesh. “Tobacco is the cause of 14.6% of adult male deaths and 5.7% of the adult female deaths in Bangladesh. Tobacco-related diseases including stroke kills almost 1 lakh people every year while another 3.82 lakh suffer from chronic illnesses caused by tobacco,” the state minister made the disclosure in an anti-tobacco campaign launching programme at secretariat on Wednesday afternoon. He said: “So, the campaign has been featuring lung cancer patient, Haziful Mina, who tells his story through a 30-second TV announcement of suffering as a result of a debilitating cancer which led to an operation to remove a cancerous tumour from one of his lungs.” More than 5,000 campaign TV announcements will be beamed across all major TV channels in the country over the next five weeks with billboards featuring the patient including graphic scenes of the operation and blackened tumour displayed in community settings around the country with the support of Vital Strategies (formerly World Lung Foundation).
