A writ petition has been lodged with the High Court on Wednesday to order the government explanation for shooting on Santals at Gaibandha's Gobindaganj and details about compensation given to the victims so far.
The petition – jointly filed by rights activist organisations Ain o Salish Kendra, Association for Land Reforms and Development; and Broti Samajik Kolyan Songstha – may be heard on Thursday, petitioners' lawyer ZI Khan Panna said.
Earlier on Nov 6, police opened fire on Santals when they protested their eviction from government land acquired for a sugar mill. Three Santals were killed and several more were injured in the clash.
After the Santals were driven away, their houses were looted and burnt allegedly by the men of the local lawmaker.
The home secretary, police's Rangpur DIG, Gaibandha DC and SP have also been named among the 11 respondents in the petition.
