The court also asked the trial courts concerned to conclude trial proceedings against the trio within 90 days and another in 60 days.
The prisoners who got bail are Makbul Hossain, Sentu Kamal and Billal Hossain. Prisoner Chan Mia was not granted bail as he had given confessional statement before magistrate court in a murder case filed against him.
Earlier on November 20, the High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and JBM Hassan had asked the jail authorities to produce these four prisoners before it by Sunday after a Supreme Court lawyer brought a news report aired by a private satellite television channel to its notice.
The report said that the four prisoners have been languishing in jail for more than one and a half decades without trial. Holding primary hearing, the court also issued a suo-moto rule on the issue and asked the authorities concerned to produce relevant case documents before it within 10 days.
Yesterday (Sunday) Kashimpur jail authorities produced them before the court. The court heard their statements and examined the case documents.
According to the media report, Chan Mia is in prison for 18 years, Billal for 17, Mokbul for 16 and Sentu for 16 years.
Chan Miah’s case has been pending with Environment Appellate Court in the capital, Makbul’s murder case with a Dhaka court, Sentu’s murder case has been under trial with Special Judge’s Court-3 of Dhaka and murder case against Billal has been under trial with another Dhaka court.
Chan Miah was arrested in 1999, Makbul in 2000, Sentu in 2001 and Billal in 2002.
