Police have seized a handful of locally made lethal weapons raiding three dormitories of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) on Sunday night.
Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police Faisal Mahmud led the drive following a written application from the university administration, said Akter Hossain, acting officer-in-charge of Jalalabad police station.
Faisal Mahmud said: “Police have seized some 42 GI pipes, five machetes, four knives and three iron rods from Shah Paran Hall; 27 GI pipes, 10 iron rods and five cricket stamps from Bangabandhu Hall and only one iron rod from Muztaba Ali Hall.”
The raid was conducted being informed that several outsiders were staying at the halls of the university.
After the raid, room no 426 of Shah Paran Hall was sealed off.
However, no outsider was found during the drive, provost of Shah Paran Hall Md Shahedul Hasan told the Dhaka Tribune.
Provosts of respective halls, chief of university’s admission test fraud investigation committee Professor Akhterul Islam and member secretary of admission test committee Belayet Hossain were also present during the drive.
General students have been demanding arrest of the masterminds behind the admission test scam since December 5. They pointed out this drive as a tool to subdue their protest.
