Chunnu: No wage increase for RMG workers

Update : 27 Dec 2016, 02:54 PM
“There is no scope to increase the wage of RMG workers at this moment," he said on Tuesday. "However, house rent in Ashulia, where most RMG workers reside, will not be raised in the next three years.” Chunnu made the statement at a media briefing at the Secretariat after a meeting of the core committee on the garment sector. “Political instigation could have played a role in the unrest," he said. "The government and law enforcement agencies have been investigating the matter. A report in this regard will be submitted to the state authorities soon.” Since December 11, several hundred RMG workers in Ashulia walked out of the factories, demanding revision of their minimum wage. The owners shut down the factories as the workers continued agitation and refrained from work. Bangladesh, the world's second-largest exporter of RMG products after China, relies heavily on the sector for around 80% of its exports. The sector employs about four million people and is known for one of the lowest wage rates in the world.
