Mayor Miru's driver detained over journalist killing
The driver of Shahjadpur municipality Mayor Halimul Haque Miru has been detained for his alleged involvement in the fatal shooting of journalist Abdul Hakim Shimul. Shahin Alam, 28, was picked up from Belkuchi upazila sadar adjacent to Shahjadpur on Monday night, police said. Shahjadpur police Officer-in-Charge Monirul Islam said Shahin was not named in the case. “We believe he has important and confidential information on the mayor,” he added. So far, nine suspects have been detained over the journalist's killing. Shimul, a correspondent of the daily "Samakal," was fatally shot by Mayor Miru when he was covering a factional clash of the ruling Awami League on February 2. He died the next day. Shimul's wife sued 18 people, including the mayor, for her husband's death. The mayor was arrested in Dhaka on Sunday.
