Train communication in Gazipur has been disrupted after several pillars and sleepers of a rail bridge were damaged in a fire.
Garment leftovers, also known as 'jhoot', and polythenes piled near one of the two bridges caught fire on Thursday morning.
Locals and firefighters managed to extinguish the flames after about an hour's frantic effort.
It is unclear if the fire was an act of arson or a mere accident.
Tongi fire service's Station Officer Atikul Rahman said several pillars of the rail bridge and sleepers were damaged.
The damaged track has been closed for repairs. Trains are using a second bridge, he added.
