The BNP has criticised the government for failing to crack the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi in five years.
BNP Senior Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi blamed government “negligence” for the delay.
“The government promised to arrest the killers within 48 hours. But it seems that those 48 hours are not over in five years,” he told reporters in Dhaka on Friday.
Maasranga TV news editor Sagar and his wife ATN Bangla senior reporter Runi were found murdered at their rented flat in Razabazar on February 11, 2012. The then home minister Sahara Khatun had promised to catch the killers within 48 hours.
So far, the court has extended the deadline for submitting the investigation report 47 times – the latest being on Wednesday. RAB is investigating the case.
Rizvi said that the procrastination in solving the case was frustrating for the victims' families and the nation.
“Journalists have been targeted during this government's tenure,” he alleged.
Incumbent Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal Thursday said that he was unaware of the investigation's current status.
Like his predecessors MK Alamgir and Sahara, Kamal said that he was also hopeful that the killers would be arrested soon.
But there has been no visible breakthrough.
A recent report by the Committee to Protect Journalists said that at least 21 journalists have been killed in Bangladesh since 1996. According to Ain o Salish Kendra, 117 journalists were assaulted last year.
The Daily Samakal correspondent Abdul Hakim Shimul is the latest victim. He was shot dead by Shahajadpur municipality Mayor Halimul Haque Miru in Sirajganj on February 3 while serving duties during a clash between two groups of the ruling Awami League.
