
Deceased Nistar alias Jahid alias Nizam, 40, was a regional leader of Sarbahara Party.
Aminpur police station Officer-in-Charge Tajul Huda said: “Being informed that the members of Lal Pataka faction of Purbo Banglar Communist Party and Sarbahara Party were at loggerheads over establishing supremacy in Darirchar, police raided the place around 3:15am Wednesday.”
Sensing the presence of police, both the groups opened fire at the law enforcers that triggered a gun battle.
“At one stage, all the extremists but Nizam managed to flee the scene. Later, police recovered Nizam’s bullet-hit body,” said the OC.
He said three constables of police were injured in the “gunfight”. They had been given primary treatment.
Police also recovered two shutter guns, two machetes and three rounds of bullets from the spot.
Police said Nizam was accused in 12 cases, including the sensational murder of three policemen in Dhalarchar.
The body was sent to Pabna General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
