Transport strikes cripple 3 southern districts, Thakurgaon

Update : 17 Feb 2017, 04:38 PM
Transport owners and workers are separately enforcing strikes for the second consecutive day in Thakurgaon and in the southern districts of Patuakhali, Barguna and Barisal causing immense sufferings to commuters. Bus owners and workers in the southern districts went on an indefinite strike on Thursday demanding keeping three wheelers off the highways and withdrawal of "fake cases" against transport workers, the UNB reports. Barguna Bus Owners Association President Golam Mostafa Kislu said that they would continue the strike until their demands were met. On February 13, police filed a case against 17 transport workers over a clash between bus workers and three-wheeler drivers at Barguna's Amtoli. Later in the day, bus owners and drivers of the three districts demanded withdrawal of the case and a ban on three-wheelers on the highways. They went on the strike as their demands were not met. Meanwhile, in Thakurgaon, no buses or trucks plied the intra-district routes since Thursday following a clash between transport workers and owners. They have been at loggerheads over "toll collection" from vehicles. Thakurgaon Superintendent of Police Farhat Ahmed said that the district administration tried to broker a deal but both sides were adamant to make up, our correspondent reports. The groups shared the "collected toll" among themselves but recently discontent grew among the labourers, who claimed they did not get their proper share. As tension mounted, the workers vandalised and torched the "toll collection" room of the vehicle owners association at the bus stand on Wednesday.
