March road crashes killed 12 and injured 28 per day

On average, 12 people were killed and 28 injured in road accidents per day in March nationwide in Bangladesh The numbers take into account accidents on the national, inter-district, and regional roads and highways. In March 2017, at least 362 people were killed and 865 others injured in 330 road accidents. Among the victims, 49 were women and 54 were children. The National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways (NCPSRR), a non-government organization, revealed the information in its regular monthly survey and observation report, said an NCPSRR press release. The report was prepared on the basis of 20 national daily newspapers, 10 regional newspapers and eight online news portals and news agencies, according to the press release.Road-Infograph-FinalOverall, the country witnessed a decrease in the number of accidents and casualties compared to the previous month. According to the report, a total of 427 people, including 56 women and 58 children, lost their lives and 1,094 others were injured in 372 road crashes in February. The report said that the countrywide transport strike for three days following a three-day transport strike in Khulna was one of the main reasons for the decrease in accidents and casualties, according to the press release. However, the country witnessed a number of accidents that took a heavy toll on human lives. Most of the victims were from low-income families, according to the report. Ashis Kumar Dey, general secretary of the NCPSRR, said that most of the fatal accidents in the last two months were due to reckless driving and the carrying of passengers on trucks and the roofs of buses.
