Members of Islami Andolon gathered at Baitul Mukarram Mosque following the Jumma prayers Friday, renewing demands for removal of the Lady Justice ‘idol’ from the Supreme Court premises.
On April 20, the Islami Andolon had given an ultimatum to the Supreme Court regarding removal of the statue, saying that half measures were not enough.
Thousands joined the protest, causing traffic in the Paltan area to be stopped. The party’s Publicity Secretary Ahmad Abdul Qayyum said that activists had come to Dhaka from across the country to join the rally.
Representatives of the party demanded that the Themis sculpture be removed before the end of the month of Ramadan, threatening to blockade the Supreme Court premises after Eid if the demand was not met.
Islami Andolon Bangladesh’s Ameer and Charmonai Pir Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim was present at the rally, among others.
