A five-member probe committee has been formed to investigate into an allegation of misuse of power in filing case against Barisal Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Gazi Tarek Salman.
Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam told media after cabinet meeting on Monday afternoon.
The Cabinet Secretary also said that the committee had been formed on July 22. “An additional secretary is heading the committee along with four joint secretaries, including members of the Prime Minister's Office,” he added.
Shafiul Alam added: “The public administration has already deemed Tarek Salman innocent of the charges. And the committee will look into whether any person influenced to arrest Tarek Salman, and if any illegal steps were taken.”

The probe committee is asked to submit report within 15 days.
Barisal UNO Gazi Tarek Salman organised an art contest, where a portrait of Bangabandhu drawn by a fifth grader won the first prize. The UNO then used the portrait on the back of an invitation card for Independence Day.
However, Advocate Obaedullah Saju, Awami League Barisal city unit religious affairs secretary, filed a Tk5 crore defamation case against Salman at the Barisal Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on June 7. Salman was sent to jail regarding the case on July 12 and was released on bail on July 13.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, surprised to hear the incident, said: “The officer did a great job by organising a drawing competition of fifth graders. There is nothing slanderous in it.”
“Rather, the portrait deserves to be awarded and so is the officer,” Sheikh Hasina praised.
