The Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Wednesday urged the government to invest its best diplomatic efforts into mounting pressure on Myanmar so that the Rohingya crisis is not prolonged and the return of Rohingyas is ensured within the shortest possible time.
The recommendation was made during the presentation of a TIB assessment report titled “Problems Related to Refuge Provided in Bangladesh to Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (Rohingya)”.
The assessment - which was prepared from September to October this year - also appreciated the role played by the national and local government, local people, 16 NGOs and 39 INGOs in dealing with the crisis.
It also highlighted challenges in the provision of food aid, safe drinking water and sanitation; and to security, the environment, and the local population.
TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said there should be transparency in managing the Rohingya crisis.
“There should a website that contains all the details on the crisis collected from the government and the non-governmental organisations so that people can get a clear understanding on the ongoing influx of Rohingya refugees,” he said.
Among other recommendations, the TIB also called on Bangladesh government, international organisations and donor countries to work to prevent and control corruption in aid distribution, create projects for crisis management, and increase capacity to register the Rohingyas.
It said sufficient measures should be taken to care for handicapped and orphaned children, and to protect the environment and strengthen security to control drug controls at borders and inside the camps.
The assessment report also emphasised the urgent need to repatriate the Rohingyas.
Iftekharuzzaman said: “We need neighboring countries such as India and China, who have diplomatic, economic and defense relationships with Myanmar, to create diplomatic pressure on Myanmar to a faster repatriation process of the Rohingyas.”
