Smart NID Card distribution in Comilla from Monday

Update : 10 Nov 2017, 09:42 AM
The distribution of Smart National Identity (NID) Cards in Comilla will begin from Monday. Election Commissioner Md Rofiqul Haque will inaugurate the distribution programme at Comilla Town Hall that day, Brig Gen Mohammad Saidul Islam, director general of the Election Commission’s NID Registration Wing, told reporters on Thursday. The NID wing also recently opened a Help Desk where people can find any information regarding NID cards by calling at 105. Election Commission officials said the commission would be able to distribute the Smart NID Cards to 12.5 million people only across the country this year. The commission initially had planned to distribute the Smart Cards among 90 million voters by the end of December. Earlier, the distribution project’s deadline was extended several times after Oberthur Technology, a French company which was in charge of the process, said it would not be able to finish printing all the cards within December. On October 2, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the distribution of the much-anticipated Smart NID Cards, replacing the existing laminated ones. The next day, the Election Commission began distributing the cards in Dhaka’s Ramna and Uttara areas and at Dashiarchhara in Kurigram in the first phase. The second phase started in a number of areas in the capital on October 24 amid poor response of voters to collect their cards in the first phase. Afterwards, Smart NID Cards were also distributed in Rajshahi, Khulna, Rangpur and Sylhet.
