Government earns Tk92cr revenue from NID Registration Wing

Update : 26 Nov 2017, 10:18 PM
The National Identity Registration Wing of Election Commission (EC) has collected Tk92 crore revenue and submitted it to the treasury in the last two years by correcting and renewing National Identity Cards (NID). Director General of EC’s NID Registration Wing Brigadier General Mohammad Saidul Islam said on Sunday that the wing has saved a total of Tk400 crore from different sectors, including Tk92 crore in NID renewal and correction. Many people lost or damaged their NIDs due to negligence but the number of applications for NID renewal and correction has drastically reduced after the EC imposed a fee on this, said a number of EC officials. On September 1, 2015, the EC imposed a fee for renewal and correction of NIDs to create awareness among the citizens.

Besides, French digital security company Oberthur Technologies compensated the EC with Tk139.90 crore as it failed to finish their agreement twice within the deadline. However, EC acting secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said the commission earned Tk350 crore from the French company. The EC acting sectary did not provide any document supporting his claim. Regarding the contradiction, DG Saidul said: “I do not know why he made such a remark. I believe he forgot the actual figure due to excessive work pressure. We have the documents and we submitted those to the government already.”
