Two more cases filed against Mahmudur for defaming Bangabandhu

A defamation case has been filed in Comilla against Daily Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman for his alleged derogatory remarks about independence and sovereignty of Bangladesh and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family. Advocate Md Ziaul Hasan Chowdhury Shohag, former vice-president of Bangladesh Chhatra League's Comilla unit, filed the Tk1,000 crore lawsuit with Comilla Judicial Magistrate Court 1 on Tuesday. Justice Md Mostain Billah ordered the OC of the Detective Branch (DB) office in Comilla to investigate the accusations levelled against Mahmudur.

Another case was filed against Mahmudur in Sunamganj over the same issue on the same day. Sunamganj district Chhatra League Joint Convener Nazmul Haque Kiron lodged the case with Sunamganj Sadar Model police station. Sunamganj Sadar police station OC Shahidullah said the case was filed under the ICT Act, so they require approval from the police headquarters to proceed with the investigation. "We are waiting for [the headquarters'] instruction," he added. According to the cases, on December 1, Mahmudur alleged that Bangladesh is not an independent country as it has no sovereignty although it has land and population.

"Bangladesh is now 'a colony of India'. If you consider political theory, Bangladesh cannot considered a sovereign state. Sheikh Mujib killed the country's democracy and independence of mass media and buried it," the case documents quoted him as saying. He also demanded that the mural of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman not be in the premises of National Press Club and claimed that the current government was an illegal government. In the last several days, several defamation cases have been filed against Mahmudur in Khulna, Sylhet, Dinajpur, Natore, Kushtia, Kurigram and some other districts.
