Bangladesh ranks lowest in terms of food security in South Asia

Update : 24 Dec 2017, 02:18 PM
Bangladesh stands on the 89th position in the recently published Global Food Security Index-2017, which is the lowest among the South-Asian countries. The general secretary of Bangladesh Food Security Network (BFSN), Nurul Alam Masud, disclosed this at a press briefing at the Dhaka Reporters' Unity on Saturday. He said though Bangladesh has gained recognition as lower-middle income country in 2015, in case of food security it secured the 89th position. The organisation also proposed a six-point recommendations including forming a Food Security Act. BFSN President Dr Mohammad Joynul Abedin said most of the countries of the world have the right to food law but Bangladesh does not. "Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina earlier in South-Asian Right to Food Conference had assured the government's devotion to establish food security in the country. So the government should consider formation of a right to food law on priority basis," he said.
