Additional IGP Patwari for deradicalizing youths with correct interpretation of religion
Additional Inspector General of Police and chief of Special Branch Dr Mohammad Javed Patwari has stressed that anti-militancy drives must incorporate deradicalization strategies involving the orientation of youth to the correct interpretation of religion. “The youth or the ones who feel like joining militant activities need to know the proper and correct interpretation of religion and the Quran. Otherwise, they will lose their ways in the dark. On the other hand, many have already been arrested and are languishing in jails in connection with militancy. We face the challenge of deradicalizing them,” he said while speaking at the launch of a television commercial on anti-militancy at the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Media Centre on Monday. “So we have to face militancy in multifarious ways and with joint efforts. We are working on that,” added Patwari, who is set to assume the office of the Inspector General of Police from the beginning of February. Addressing the program as chief guest, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said: “We can't demolish crimes, including militancy, just with coercion. We will move towards creating a beautiful Bangladesh by understanding poetry, books, songs and love. Our law enforcers are working on that.” This type of anti-militancy campaign would help to reduce the motivation for joining  militancy, and will also help rehabilitate youths involved in militant activities, he added. RAB Director General Benazir Ahmed said the elite force has been publishing anti-militancy posters and leaflets to create mass awareness against militancy. “We are also published the counter-narratives. This commercial on anti-militancy is a part of that campaign,” he added.
