BTRC: Half of the population uses internet

Some 317,000 new subscribers started using internet in December last year and pushed the total internet users of the country to a little over 80 million, according to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). The new statistics revealed by the regulator on Monday showed that over half of the population is now using internet while mobile phone users are almost near 100%. The number of mobile phone users in December last year was over 145 million. It was 143 million in November. Most of the subscribers use mobile internet and their number was 75 million, while number of WiMAX subscribers stood at 89,000, and 5.34 million use ISP and PSTN internet. In November last year, the country had crossed the 80 million landmark of internet subscribers followed by April’s 70 million. Of the total mobile phone subscribers, Grameenphone is on top with 65.3 million subscribers, followed by Robi with 42.9 million, Banglalink with 32.3 million and state-owned Teletalk with 449,400 subscribers. Bangladesh reached the milestone of 140 million mobile phone users in November last year.
