General prisoners have to wear specific dress inside the jail but those given the status of first-class prisoners can dress according to their choice.
“Since BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been granted division 1, she will get to wear clothes to her liking,” Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) Touhidul Islam has said.
Section 1165 of the jail code states that a general male prisoner will be provided with three pajamas, 2 long pajamas, two kurta or half-shirts, two cotton shirts, two pairs of cotton socks and a cap.
A general female convict will be given three saris, two cotton blouses, two chemises and two pairs of cotton socks.
During the winter or rainy seasons, the jail authority provides one woollen coat and two flannel shirts for males and one cotton blouse, one woollen blouse, two flannel chemise and two pairs of cotton socks for females.
On the other hand, according to section 1048 of jail code, the prisoners who get first class divisions can wear clothes according to their choice. But the clothes have to be suitable for wearing and should not be offensive.
With jail superintendent’s special permission, a prisoner with first class division can collect additional clothes with their own expenses. But clothes deemed political are not allowed.
However, if any convict wants to wear clothes provided by the government, then they will be given clothes worn by second class prisoners.
The prisoner will also be given soap for washing clothes. But if the prisoner is not used to washing clothes, the jail super will have them washed. The prisoner will not be charged money for this.
Khaleda’s lawyer in the Zia Orphanage Trust case Aminul Islam said: "Prisoners who are granted first-class division can wear whatever they like. Nothing particular regarding it has been said in the jail code."
DIG (Prisons) Touhidul confirmed this, saying: "Khaleda Zia can wear what she likes. There are no specific directions regarding her clothing in the jail code."
