BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman on Thursday sent a legal notice to Naimul Islam, chief-editor of online news portal amadersomoy.com.
The notice alleged the portal published fabricated news, reading that Tarique, his wife Zobaida Rahman, and their daughter Zaima Rahman have applied for British citizenship, in a deliberate attempt to tarnish his political and social image.
In the report, the news portal also claimed that Zobaida and Zamima have savings amounting to Tk 770 crore in different countries of the world.
Warning that Tarique would take legal action under the Criminal Procedure Court (CrPC), the notice also demanded that the news published on the portal on February 20 be withdrawn within two weeks, and a rejoinder be published.
Confirming the issuance of the legal notice, Tarique Rahman's lawyer Kaisar Kamal said false news such as this is a punishable offence under the existing laws of the country, in addition to being a gross violation of professionalism and ethics.
