February 14 could be declared Press Day in Bangladesh
Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu announced on Tuesday that a bill proposing February 14 be declared Press Day will be submitted to the Jatiya Sangsad. He was speaking at the biannual general meeting of Dhaka Union of Reporters' at the National Press Club. The minister praised the media, saying: "The Sheikh Hasina government does not want a pet media. We want a media which provides constructive criticism of the government. But we are against yellow journalism which sides with militancy. "A pet news media weakens the foundations of democracy. Our government has been working for the benefit of mass media personnel from the beginning. He said the Conditions for Mass Media Employment Bill will be proposed in the parliament to ensure safety and rights of journalists. The minister then proceeded to assuage the concerns of journalists regarding the draft of the Digital Security Act, saying he will accept personal letters from concerned members and discuss them with the prime minister and other concerned ministries. Inu said the present government has implemented the 8th and 9th Wage Board for journalists, the latter on January 29. He also noted the government's achievements in forming the Journalist Assistance Allowance/Donation Policy 2012, the Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust Law 2014, and the National Online Media Policy 2017. Minister Inu said as many as 16,001 journalists working in newspapers were given training by the Press Institute of Bangladesh and another 2,255 journalists of electronic media was trained by the National Institute of Mass Media. In addition, he also highlighted the one-year course post-graduate diploma in broadcast journalism and a two-year Master's Degree program prepared by the PIB. The information minister said the work on the final amendment to the draft of the proposed Broadcast Law, 2018 for formation of the Broadcast Commission for electronic media is going on.
