13 dead in political violence since January
Political violence since the beginning of this year has left at least 13 people dead and nearly 1,050 others injured, according to rights group Odhikar’s February report. Last month alone, four people were killed and 424 were injured due to political violence, according to a Human Rights Monitoring Report published on Thursday. There were 34 incidents of internal violence in the ruling Awami League and one in the BNP during this period. One person was killed and 371 others were injured in the ruling party’s internal conflicts. On the other hand, the BNP’s conflicts left one dead and three injured. In January, political violence had left nine dead and 619 others injured, according to the Odhikar report. These conflicts often result from attempts to establish supremacy. Odhikar has recommended the government to take concrete steps to stop political violence. “The government must also take legal action against the ruling party leaders and activists for criminal activities in order to prevent criminalisation,” it added.
