Dr Yasmeen Haque, wife of Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, said he called her immediately after he was stabbed.
She was speaking at a press conference at the Combined Military Hospital where he is now being treated.
She said: "He called me and said 'There has been an attack on me. I do not want you or Yesheem [their daughter] to hear of this from the news.' I asked him if he was in pain and he replied 'It did not hurt so much initially, but I am bleeding.' Because of the calm tenor of his voice, my fears were very much allayed."

On Saturday afternoon, Prof Zafar Iqbal was attacked by a young man during an event at the Shahjalal University of Science & Technology campus.
He was taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and then flown to Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka at the prime minister's behest.
The attacker was identified as Faizul, a local hawker who also claimed to be a madrasa student. He has been detained and is in police custody.
