Attack on Zafar Iqbal: SUST forms probe body

Authorities at the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) on Sunday formed a three-member committee to investigate the attempted murder of eminent writer Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal. The probe body involves Prof Dr Abdul Gani of chemistry as its head, Prof Saidul Islam of the same department and Prof Dr Shahidur Rahman of computer science and engineering, SUST Vice Chancellor Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed told the Dhaka Tribune. On Saturday afternoon, Foyzur Rahman Faizul, a local hawker who also claimed to be a madrasa student, stabbed Zafar Iqbal, head of the department of electrical and electronic engineering (EEE) at SUST, during a ceremony on the SUST campus. Consultant Surgeon General Maj Gen Munshi Muhammad Mujibur Rahman of Combined Military Hospital said: “Zafar Iqbal has suffered six wounds – four in the neck and one each in the back and left arm. The wounds are all flesh wounds, and are not severe.” A medical team cleansed the wounds to prevent any infection and Prof Zafar’s condition is now stable, he added.Prof Zafar Iqbal is out of danger now, according to a press release issued by Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) on Sunday. The SUST authorities filed a case with Jalalabad police station in Sylhet on Sunday in connection with the attack. SUST Registrar Md Ishfaqul Hussain said statements of two teachers were recorded and submitted to the police along with other necessary documents. Attacker Foyzur, son of Atikul Islam of Sunamganj district’s Derai upazila, lived with his family in Sheikhpara area near the university campus and was detained by the SUST authorities after a severe thrashing. Later, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) 9 handed him over to police following a preliminary interrogation.
