Yasmeen: PM's visit gave Zafar a boost
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to the hospital has given eminent academic Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal a boost, says his wife Yasmeen Haque. Zafar Iqbal, after being injured in an attack at a program at Sylhet’s Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) two days ago, is currently undergoing treatment in the critical care unit at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka. Hasina went there around 12:30pm on Monday and spent about 25 minutes with the SUST teacher, said her Security Affairs Adviser Tarique Ahmed Siddique. She enquired about his condition and treatment. Apart from Yasmeen, who is also a professor at SUST, their daughter Yishmin Iqbal was also at the hospital beside the noted author. Yasmeen said: “The prime minister was here for a while and had a heart-to-heart with him. I think that worked as a boost for him.” Zafar Iqbal was stabbed in the back of his head by an assailant armed with a knife on Saturday afternoon while attending a two-day long fair organized by the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of SUST.

The attacker, who was later identified as Foyzur Rahman Faizul, was, however, immediately taken down and detained by students and authorities after a severe thrashing. After receiving immediate treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, Zafar Iqbal was airlifted to CMH that night following the prime minister’s order. After the prime minister’s visit on Monday, Yasmeen said: “Senior doctors and Maj Gen Motahar, who are here, have briefed her (Hasina) in detail about the treatment starting from Osmani Medical College Hospital. The doctors have said everything is fine.” “Doctors also said that he will be on regular diet from today [Monday],” she said. Yasmeen said she thanked the prime minister for issuing the order to bring Zafar Iqbal to CMH because no one will disturb him here. “She (Hasina) took the decision very quickly. I am grateful for what she did for Zafar Iqbal. Bringing him here was the right decision.” Zafar Iqbal would be under observation for several more days at CMH, she added. “He is doing better now. But he will be kept here to avoid any kind of infection.” The renowned writer, in his usual humble manner, also expressed gratitude to the prime minister when she visited him.
