Muhith: Most of the beggars are now professional
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith said on Thursday that government was struggling to settle the beggars as most of them were professional beggars. "No one begs out of poverty. They continue begging though government is providing all facilities. There are 600,000 beggars in Bangladesh. Most of them are professional beggars." His remarks came as he was addressing a program of Anti-Corruption Prevention Week at Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka organized by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to reward the members of the best committees at upazila, district and division levels who contributed to prevent corruption. The finance minister also said: "I believe there will be no more beggars in the country if Sheikh Hasina comes to power again. The new generation will follow the purification strategy. The ACC will remain as watchdog. “After eight or 10 years, nobody will say Bangladesh is a corrupted country as the corruption will be minimized with effective program." Mentioning the government salary as standard, Muhith said: "No government employee is paid under Tk16,000. Engaging with corruption is their greed and habit. It is almost impossible to prevent this immoral practice. But the effort to prevent the corruption from the country will continue." Expressing concern over chartered accountancy firms’ fake financial report, ACC Chairman Iqbal Mahmood said some organizations were using different financial statements in the same year in different financial institutions. He expressed surprise over the fact that financial statements submitted in the Income Tax department were not similar to the statements submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission for the IPO or the statements submitted for borrowing money from the bank. Iqbal said: "We received such complaints. We expect CA firms to provide accurate information. If they do not maintain it, ACC will investigate and take action." Eelier in the morning, the ACC chairman also inaugurated a blood donation drive at the commission headquarters.
