CEC for curbing the power of MPs if election is held with parliament in place
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda has said the commission will consider changes in the electoral code of conduct to create a level-playing field in case the election is held without dissolving parliament. He was speaking at a Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) event on Saturday, reports BSS. Asked whether the Election Commission would limit the power of MPs if parliament is not dissolved before the polls, Huda said: “This is a good point. We must think about this.” The CEC also expressed optimism that all registered political parties will take part in the next parliament election. The CEC said if all parties do not take part the election will not be a competitive one. “It will be unfortunate if it is the same kind of election as before,” he said. “It cannot be a good election unless all parties participate. We have hopes. The media has a role to play.” About the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs), Huda said the decision in this regard is yet to be taken. EVMs will be used experimentally in local government elections, including upcoming Gazipur and Khulna city corporation polls, he said. The CEC said if the main stakeholders in the elections- political parties and voters- agree on the use of EVM in the polls, then it will be used in the national elections too. “Voting manually is a difficult process. In this age of ICT, our effort is towards reducing those difficulties,” he said. Asked whether the EC can play an effective role in addressing the lack of confidence political parties have expressed, Huda said the political parties were less concerned about the EC's neutrality and more about pressing political issues. “We have not seen anything that conveys lack of confidence. If any such thing comes up, we will address it,” he said. CEC Huda said certain things were not in the hands of the commission. “What will the government look like during the polls, what its structure will be – the government decides these things, not the commission. We cannot do anything about that,” he said. “We are determined to hold a neutral election, but all parties need to participate in the polls,” he added.
